Beautiful Beachfront Villages In The Algarve

With spectacular scenery around every corner, the Algarve has some of the most beautiful beachfront villages. Here are our top choices.

The Algarve has long been a popular destination for tourists and expats, year-round sunshine and incredible beaches blended with buzzing hotspots and tranquil fishing villages. The Algarve’s coastline has plenty of locations with ideal investment properties and a pace of life to suit everyone. And interest rates at an all-time low, buying a property in Portugal makes sense.

Situated in a great location, in central Algarve the charming fishing village of Ferragudo is less than 15 minutes drive from the big city amenities of Portimão. Ferragudo itself has a laidback vibe with a flourishing arts scene and lots of restaurants with al-fresco seating. Leading off the main square Praça Rainha Dona Leonor, there are cosy petisco bars and shops selling handmade gifts. The main beach Praia da Angrinha is a short walk from the harbour. A little further on is Praia Grande with is trendy beachfront bars.

Properties range from traditional Portuguese cottages to modern apartments. Townhouses can be found with roof terraces boasting views towards the Serra de Monchique mountains in one direction, and the Atlantic Ocean in the other direction.

The resort has excellent infrastructure, mini-markets, bars and restaurants catering for all tastes. The mile-long golden sandy beach of Praia de Quarteira Beach is backed by a promenade of palm trees, cafes and superb seafood restaurants. Faro airport is less than 30 minutes away and Aquashow Water Park even closer.

One of the first resorts in the Algarve, it has lots of tower blocks built after the 1970’s – properties are modern and often with fantastic sea views. More recently, semi-detached villas linked to golf resorts have become available.

Glamorous Vilamoura has five-star resorts, casino and a renowned golf academy. You’ll find beautiful modern properties with private pools in this purpose-built resort.

Two beautiful Blue Flag beaches Praia de Vilamoura and Praia da Falésia sit either side of a marina with designer shops, posh bars and super-yachts. This lively resort in central Algarve allows easy access to Faro airport and local attractions. Strangely, the public transport infrastructure is not so good, so a car will be essential.

Located in Costa Vicentina Natural Park, tranquil Salema is the perfect choice for getting back to nature. A typical fishing village with cobblestone paths leading to a beautiful Blue Flag beach of soft, golden sand. Salema has good access to the city of Lagos and the famous surf resort of Sagres. Fisherman cottages or modern townhouses typically have shared swimming pools and sea views – good rental rates in high season.

Monte Gordo

Monte Gordo has a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. It delivers excellent value for money compared to the bigger resorts in central Algarve. You will find all the amenities in this buzzing resort. Located in the south-eastern corner of the Algarve it has a beautiful white sandy beach, and for those prepared to do some exploring, you will find the pristine beaches Praia da Ponta da Areia and Praia de Santo Antonio to the east. Close to the Spanish border, it is easy to hop across to Seville.

Two-bed apartments are the most common property type, but it is possible to find studios and villas. The bulk of properties are within residential complexes.

Home to some of Portugal’s most under-rated golden blanketed beaches, Tavira is an old-school Algarve town, with pretty cobbled streets, ancient churches, Moorish influenced architecture and medieval castle ruins.

Property is reasonably priced, whether you choose a modern apartment in the city centre or a luxury villa fronting the natural park.
